NHIS enrollee data base hits 7.5 million

The National Health Insurance Scheme has applauded the recent improvement in enrollee uptake data base from 5.5 million to about 7.5 million within the last nine months.
A statement on Thursday in Abuja by the Head of Media and Public Relations Division of NHIS, Ayo Osinlu, quoted the Executive Secretary of the scheme, Dr. Femi Thomas, as making the revelation during a mid-term management retreat held in  Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.
The retreat was attended by members of the top management committee, Zonal and State Coordinators as well as heads of various divisions in NHIS.
According to him,  the growth is a boost to the various efforts of NHIS to attain the Presidential mandate of providing health insurance coverage to over 40 per cent of the Nigerian population by the end of 2015.
Thomas said, “Between 2011 and 2013, only about 600,000 lives were added to the Scheme’s data base, while this year alone the number has grown by about two million. This is by no means a small achievement, and we therefore congratulate everyone that has played a part in this major leap.”
While ascribing the success to the new culture of doing things right, Thomas reiterated the determination of the NHIS to keep all its stakeholders on their toes in the quest to maintain the highest professional and ethical standards in the implementation of its programmes.
This, he said, informed the recent engagement of a reputable international agency, PriceWaterhouse Coppers, for an evaluation of the level of compliance of Health Maintenance Organisations with the standards set for the effective and unfailing delivery of quality services under the scheme.
