Boko Haram abducts 30 boys, girls in another raid

Cameroon kills 39 sect fighters
No fewer than 30 boys and girls were at the weekend abducted in a Borno State village as BokoHaram continued to violate the “ceasefire” it allegedly reached with the government.
Some government officials had a discussion with some Boko Haram representatives in Saudi Arabia two weeks ago after which a ceasefire was pronounced by Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh.
Talks are going on in N’Djamena, the Chadian capital, believed to be coordinated by President Idris Derby.
The release of the abducted 219 Chibok girls, since April, is believed to be top of the discussion.
But the sect has continued its violence without let, although its representative at the Saudi talks said the attacks were being carried out by “armed robbers”.
Boko Haram at the weekend killed 17 in attacks. It abducted 30 girls and boys in a Borno village and killed four Nigerians in an attack on a Nigerian refugees’ camp in Cameroon. The Nigerians in the camp were those who fled Boko Haram’s attacks.
A local chief confirmed the attack and abductions to reporters yesterday.
“The insurgents… grabbed young people, boys and girls, from our region,” said Alhaji Shettima Maina, who is in charge of the Mafa village around 50km east of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital
“They took all boys aged 13 and over… and all girls aged 11 and more. According to our information, 30 young people were abducted in the last two days.” Another village elder, Mallam Ashiekh Mustapha, confirmed the account to the French News Agency (AFP)
Both men said 17 people were also killed in recent days in a Boko Haram attack on the nearby village of Ndongo.
Kidnapping young women and girls — as well as forcibly conscripting young men and boys to fight for Boko Haram — is a well-established tactic by the militants.
Some estimates put the number of women held by the group in the high hundreds. Most are believed to be forced into marriages with rebels.
Mr. Maina said his village and areas around it were targeted in nearly daily raids by Boko Haram, prompting many residents to flee to the city of Maiduguri for safety. He said he had pleaded for help from the government but that so far none had been forthcoming.
The sect members also attacked a refugees’ camp, where Nigerians running from insurgency are camped in Cameroon. Four Nigerians were killed. A Cameroonian was injured. It was one of the three raids they carried out on Cameroon territory.
But Cameroonian forces subsequently killed 39 Boko Haram men. Cameroon’s Defence Ministry, in a statement yesterday, said Friday’s fighting in the far north of Cameroon near Nigeria also claimed four civilian lives.
Their latest attack targeted the village of Glawi, “killing four Nigerian refugees and wounding one Cameroonian, before being pushed back by defence forces which pursued them until the borders,” the ministry said, adding that a dozen militants were killed by troops.
Another two groups of Boko Haram Islamists entered Cameroon at around the same time, but were “immediately intercepted and neutralised by our defence forces who destroyed three 4×4 vehicles equipped with machine guns, killing 27 assailants,” said the ministry statement.
The toll issued by the ministry has not been confirmed by independent sources. There was also no details on any casualties suffered by the army.

Celebrities can win elections — Edochie

Pete Edochie
Veteran Nollywood actor, Pete Edochie, in this interview with TOBI AWORINDE, says entertainers should be given a chance to occupy political positions and should not be condemned for running for public office
How would you react to artistes’ involvement in politics?
There is nothing wrong with that. If an artiste decides to go into politics, it is welcome. In some parts of the world, you have people who take time off from acting to go into politics. In the United States of America, for instance, we have Ronald Reagan, who was a Hollywood actor that later went into politics, eventually becoming the President of the US. (Arnold) Schwarzenegger, as you know, is also a Hollywood actor. He got into politics and became the Governor of California. There is nothing wrong with it at all.
Observers have been asking, ‘Why are many artistes rushing into politics at the same time?’
What is wrong with that? Most of those actors are brilliant young men (and women) and I think they can make some good contributions; unlike most of the people who are there, who just cart away money and don’t contribute anything. I think it is good for the industry. We’ve got to let the nation know that these are not dropouts. They are well-educated young men (and women) who can hold their own anywhere in the world. If they go into politics and they are voted for, fantastic! I will be very happy about it.
Politics is largely about leadership. Some have questioned whether these artistes have the requisite experience to govern.
How many politicians do you know that had to undergo tutelage anywhere before they went into politics? If you have the requisite qualification and you are running your family without interference from others; if you can run your family, you can run a country. I have been running my family for the past 45 years and I can run the country comfortably. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. People go on and on about leadership. If you are well-educated and you know what your priorities are, that is what makes leadership. It is not just saying, ‘I am a leader.’ No. How you react to challenging situations is what makes you a leader. Therefore, I believe that these artistes, if they are given the opportunity, can make their mark. I am in support of them.
What innovations do you think artistes can bring to governance in Nigeria?
That is hypothetical. Why don’t you wait until the artiste goes in? It is like someone going to get married, and you say, ‘Don’t you think your first child is going to be a boy?’ It is hypothetical. Let us wait until they get it; we see the situations that will confront them and then we determine from their reactions what quality of leadership they have.
A controversial artiste recently criticised the idea of artistes going into politics, saying a lot of them don’t have anything to offer and that they want to embezzle money. Does he have a point?
He is entitled to his opinion on any issue whatsoever. There is nothing wrong in his opinion. I mean, I am talking to you; I have never met you. But if tomorrow you say you’re going into politics, I wouldn’t say you’re going to be a thief, when I have never read from anywhere that you stole something. The artiste you referred to always wants to be sensational. I am not for sensationalism; I am being practical. I retired from the civil service as a director and a big one too. There is nobody in the industry that got to that mark before retiring, if they got into the civil service at all. When I make comments, I make constructive, philosophical, critical, mature comments. I don’t just talk carelessly. If somebody says he is going into politics, fine; encourage that person. We are always talking about lack of leadership. How do you know if somebody can lead, if you don’t give him the opportunity? That is my contention. If anybody says he is getting into politics, give the person a chance. If the people who are going to vote for him vote for him because they know who he is, who are we to challenge his choice? This is why I believe the artistes who want to go into politics are entitled to their choice of life outside of acting. It doesn’t make them any less of actors. But when they get into political office, we can then assess them. After all, Abike Dabiri-Erewa was on television; then she went into politics and my assessment of her is that she has been doing marvelously well. And she’s not the only person. Let’s give them a chance.
Politicians are arguably unpopular mainly for failing to fulfill the promises they make during elections. Coming from the world of make-believe, do you think these artistes may be faced with the dilemma of proving to the electorate that they are not ‘acting’?
It’s like someone saying, ‘If he goes into politics, what is he going to do? Won’t he be seeing politics as just another arena for histrionics?’ If I can stay with my family, with my wife, for 45 years, and nobody has come in to say, ‘Please, stop beating her up’ or ‘Please, stop insulting this man’; if I can raise my five sons through the university; if I can sit down and say proudly, ‘Today, I have 10 grandchildren and I am expecting more,’ don’t you think I can run a country if asked to? Don’t you think if given a portfolio, I can defend it?
I left the civil service as a director. I ran a radio station and it was voted the best radio station in the country. I was doing that because the British Broadcasting Corporation trained me. If it is decided tomorrow that I should be given an appointment as Chairman of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, are you going to say, ‘He doesn’t have any experience’? Are you going to say, ‘He will just be an actor’? No. This is why I am saying we are jumping the gun. Why don’t you allow them to contest first? If they win, assess them through their reactions to challenging situations. This is what makes a man. You’re not going to say, ‘Because this man was an actor for a couple of years, he wants to go into politics. He can’t make it.’ That is silly. That is nonsense. I have counted two or three actors on the international plane who made it as actors in politics. I mentioned Ronald Reagan; he ran the United States and he was one of the most serious, established, dependable politicians that the Republican Party had. Again, you have Schwarzenegger — an Austrian, by the way, being naturalised as an American. He contested and won. There’s also a bodybuilder called Jesse Ventura. When Ventura was doing bodybuilding and wrestling, nobody knew he was going to make a good politician, until he became the governor of Massachusetts. History is replete with such characters. Why should Nigeria be different, I ask you? There is even a tendency to under-assess people, because of what we see, and that is not fair. I am a Christian and I am gladly one. I don’t condemn people as guilty before they are listened to. It is like how, in Nigeria, the police beat you to a pulp before you are proven innocent.
But then, a significant number of these artistes have had troubled marriages and other such problems on the home front…
Most of the people we have in Nigerian politics have not had marital successes in their homes. We must be honest to ourselves. When we look at some of the earliest breed of politicians, some of them were not married; some of them were divorced; some were polygamous, and so on. If you are to assess people based on their marital experiments, it may not be a very fine yardstick for determining somebody’s political competence, because you don’t know the circumstances that led to the breakups. It is true that, if you have a successful marital life, it can lead unto, again, a successful political life, because the problems you have as a married man, one encounters along the line as a politician. More so, it is because of the individuals who are unmanageable, cantankerous, cranky, or irresponsible. But you have to look for what is acceptable in their characters. There are people who have ineradicable flaws in their constitution; still, there are redeeming aspects in their personal lives. When you get to meet such people, get what you think is a plus from them. It is just like managing footballers. Footballers are very difficult characters to manage. A lot of them have habits I wouldn’t really like to talk about. But when they get into the field of play, they score goals and they win odds. That is their area of specialisation. It is difficult to find a person who is perfect. If people say, because these people have had failed marriages, they cannot succeed, that is not a fair assessment. It’s not proper to assess somebody like that. I believe, in all honesty, that the people who will vote for them are people who already know them; people who have interacted with them one-on-one and are in a position to tell you how good or disagreeable they are. Why don’t we leave this to the electorate to handle?

Techno Gas to invest N1bn on pre-paid meters

Techno Gas and Power is to spend one billion naira in the next five years to manufacture pre-paid meters in partnership with a Bulgarian metering solutions firm, known as Incotex.
The Managing Director of Techno Gas and Power, Mr Collins Onyeama, told newsmen in Lagos on Sunday that the investment would enable the Nigerian firm to produce up to 350,000 pre-paid meters yearly to meet the needs of millions of electricity consumers.
He said that the partnership with Incotex would result eventually to the setting up of a plant in Lagos to manufacture the meters locally to provide jobs for the teeming populace.
Onyeama estimated that about N150bn was needed yearly to provide up to 6.5 million pre-paid meters every year for the next five years to meet the demands of Nigerian households needing pre-paid meters.
The chief executive officer said that Techno Gas and Power had trained up to 50 people to handle the installing of the company’s meters, assuring that the number would be increased to 100 by year end.
He said that the involvement of the Bulgarian firm had also made it possible to ensure that consumers used their meters within 48 days of purchase.
According to him, the 48 days is in line with the Credit Advance Payment for Meter Installation requirement.
He said, “The partnership became necessary to urgently address the vacuum created by the inability of the Power Holden Company of Nigeria to provide meters where they are needed.
“We are all aware of the discomfort suffered by millions of electricity consumers nationwide who are unable to get electricity meters due to no fault of theirs.”
Onyeama said Techno Gas and Power decided to tackle the problem squarely, entering into partnership with the European firm, to make meters available to teeming Nigerians hungry for meters.
He lamented the difficulties many electricity consumers often went through in their bid to acquire meters, regretting that “many have had to contend with the painful option of enduring estimated billing.
“I can now assure Nigerians that the era of `no meter’ or `estimated billing’ will soon be over with the decision of Techno Gas and Power to embark on mass production of meters in partnership with Incotex,” he stated.
The managing director disclosed that his firm and Incotex had also held exploratory talks with Electricity Distribution Companies in Enugu, Ibadan and Ikeja, Lagos to ensure smooth business relationships.
Onyeama said that Techno Gas and Power had similarly, reached an understanding with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to find ways to tackle challenges in the power sector.
A representative of Incotex, Mr Steve Muckett, said that the partnership with his company would bring a robust era in the Nigerian power sector, saying that Incotex could produce more than two million pre-paid meters annually
He explained that the meters were produced in accordance with European quality standards, noting that the meters would meet various segments of the Nigerian market.
“We can assure Nigerians that the era of crazy billing and estimated billing will soon come to an end,” Muckett, a Briton stated.

Managing your company with software

Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata Jnr.
One advantage that ICT has brought to the world lies in its capacity to make life a whole lot easier for those who apply it one way or the other in their daily individual and corporate lives.
As a small enterprise operator, I can attest to the fact that software as a service has made life a lot easier as quite a number of IT services are now available at less expensive prices.
However, many businesses still prefer to be in control of their data which is quite understandable especially if it is a high risk business such as banking. I probably care less as an SME operator and that is why I am happy with may cloud based SAAS but honestly may have a rethink as business grows bigger and customers begin to entrust sensitive data to my care.
Undoubtedly, companies all over the world do generate huge amount of data in the course of performing their daily routines. A variety of Information Management Software are available to a company to manage large volumes of data from diverse sources to achieve a more informed, faster decision making procedure, as well as streamline various processes across the entire organisational structure.
The software is intricately designed to help you in governing data proactively, other than ensure accurate and complete information, facilitate regulatory compliance and minimise your IT costs.
Potential benefits of applying IT-related information software in your business
  • Ensuring that decision making becomes much smarter with timely, accurate and complete information at hand
  • Ensuring that business operations are streamlined across incongruent systems with reliable and consistent data
  • Providing enhanced levels of productivity with ready access to all content that is relevant to such processes as are run by your business
  • Superior regulatory compliance, along with effective management of the information lifecycle
As a whole, Information Management Software comprise systems that are principally based on computers and which in effect help in providing information desirable for effective management of an organisation.
The software is, hence, designed with the prime objective of enhancing the level of communication between company employees, supporting the strategic direction and goals of the organisation and least of all, for providing an adept system that records information crucial to the wellbeing of the organisation and its prospective business interests.
Transaction Processing
Among a diversified range of Information Management Software available today is the transaction processing software. It is purposely designed for dealing with huge volumes of transactions that are routine. These are day to day transactions that come in large volumes.
First launched in the 1960s with the advent of the mainframe version of computers, transaction processing software has gained a wide range of usage in today’s business and commercial world. For one, banks are among its top current users, particularly where maintenance of efficient record for bank payments and deposits into various accounts is given the highest priority.
Supermarkets too are not left out as they make regular use of the transaction processing software for tracking their inventory and recording daily sales. So is it with so many other fields of endeavours. Many company managers often make use of the transaction processing software for dealing with tasks that generally include customer billing, supplier payments and payroll.
Operations Software
After the launch of transaction processing software, operations information software found all-round utility in the market. Operating information software is useful for gathering comprehensive data, which is then summarised and further organised in a manner that managers find greatly helpful. The summary and organisation of data save the managers a whole lot of time that would otherwise have been concentrated in sifting through a whole heap of data.
Since its prime function is the access of data generated by the transaction processing software and organising the same into usable forms, company managers prefer making use of this software for obtaining information related to accounting, inventory, sales and other business performances.
Management Applications
One thing that will really determine the success or otherwise of the application of Information Management Software by an organisation is for all the staff in the organisation to flow with the tide and synergise to make effective use of management software applications.
One sure way to achieve this is to ensure that all the staff in the organisation are well trained in the application of management software. This way, they will learn how to effectively access and share relevant information that will propel the organisation to success in record time.
It is sad to note that some organisations spend a lot on acquiring the best tools that can help their processes but neglect the training of the manpower that will utilise those tools to achieve the objectives the tools are meant to achieve. This is not good enough.
Organisations should brace up and improve on staff training. This is because having the required tools like the information software without training those who will use it is like buying a car and giving the keys to the car to a greenhorn who does not know anything about driving a car. We all know the obvious result of taking such an action – a fatal accident! The same should be expected of an organisation that fails to train its staff on the tools they are supposed to use to improve the job processes.

Armed thugs invade Edo lawmakers quarters

Hoodlums on Saturday morning attacked the legislative quarters of the Edo State House of Assembly in Benin, vandalising property worth millions of naira.
The action deepened the crisis in the state assembly. Our correspondent gathered that the armed hoodlums, numbering over 100, forced their way into the premises located at Iyama Road of the city at about 6:30am, after overpowering the security personnel at the entrance.
The attack caused the occupants to scamper to safety. When our correspondent got to the scene, some of the windows of the apartments were shattered while bullet holes were seen on some of the vehicles and doors.
The Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, who arrived at the scene of the incident at about 11am, was conducted round the quarters by the Speaker, Uyi Igbe, condemned the attack on the lawmakers and their family members.
The governor also accused the Peoples Democratic Party of masterminding the mayhem.
He also took a swipe at the police, alleging that they “granted permission” for the attack.
Addressing newsmen after the inspection, Oshiomhole said, “The PDP leaders had a meeting where it was decided that thugs should be recruited to come and perpetrate this attack.
“It is very clear that the police granted permission for this attack because the Commissioner of Police was informed at about 10:00pm last night of the plan of the PDP to attack the legislative quarters and the APC office.
“We made this intelligence available to the commissioner of police and what we then saw was that even the minimal police presence here was vacated so that these thugs could come and have a free reign of terror. It was conveyed to the CP last night that they were going to assemble at George Idah Primary School.”
He added, “They actually assembled at George Idah Primary School this morning before they proceeded and the police provided supervision for this very serious criminal act. It is very clear that the police command leadership granted permission to the PDP to carry out this heinous crime.”
The governor also lamented that the PDP in the state, sought to make the state ungovernable, rather than share the concern of President Goodluck Jonathan, who is a member of the party, to address the challenges of insurgency in the country.
He said, “I think for all Nigerians, at a time when we are confronted by insurgency and other forms of violent crime, one will expect that any functionary of the other party will share the concern of the President on peace and security.
“Some of the PDP leaders in Edo State having lost out and rejected by the people believe that they can create a situation that will make Edo State ungovernable and create complete distraction in their futile calculation that they can remove themselves from power.
“This is a very dangerous thing. I am not so much worried about the violent character of the PDP, I am more worried by what seems to be the police readiness to provide them with cover.”
Oshiomhole, while warning the major opposition party in the state, said, “Power is very transient,” gave the assurance that his administration would not be distracted from its constitutional duty of governance.
He said, “My warning to PDP is that power is very transient. Today you are in power, tomorrow you are out of power. Any crime you have committed and the present political order covers you, when the order changes, you will report to justice.
“Yesterday (Friday) at the airport, the President came and, in line with my conviction that he is the President of Nigeria and not of a particular party, I went to receive him. When he was here two weeks ago to address a rally, I went to the airport to receive him. For me, that is the idea of politics. It is not war. It should not be so primitive.
“Yesterday (Friday) again, I went to the airport to receive the President for the ground breaking ceremony of a private sector investment which we jointly midwifed with over $800 million. This same Pastor Ize-Iyamu organised rascals and they were abusing themselves.”
But the leadership of the Edo State PDP, while briefing journalists in Benin on Saturday, dismissed the allegations that the party masterminded the attack at the premises of the lawmakers.
The State Chairman of the party, Mr. Dan Orbih, debunked the claim that a meeting was held late on Friday night where they hatched the plot.
He said that the only activity conducted on Friday was to welcome the President to the state.
Orbih said, “There is no truth whatsoever in the governor’s allegations. After welcoming Mr. President to Edo State on Friday, many of us went to our houses, had a light dinner and went to bed.
“It is common knowledge that what happened might have been born out of the attack on Rasaq Momoh and the fact that those accused are now free today. What happened this morning was not the work of our party. We believe in the law enforcement agencies to deal with the situation.”
While saying the police would not “join issues with anybody,” the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Foluso Adebanjo, told our correspondent on telephone that the state command had arrested 12 persons in connection with the Saturday attack.
He also claimed that the vehicle purportedly used to convey the attackers had been recovered, adding that more arrests would be made.
“We do not want to join issues with anybody. All I can say is that we have arrested about 12 and we have recovered the vehicle that they used.”
“We are in a meeting now and we are going to get more and more. We will not allow any lawlessness being perpetrated by political gladiators,” Adebanjo said.

2015 secret meeting fallout: Don’t field Atiku, Obasanjo warns APC

Obasanjo and Atiku
There are strong indications that former President Olusegun Obasanjo may have warned the All Progressives Congress not to field former Vice-President Abubakar Atiku as its flagbearer in the 2015 elections.
Obasanjo, during a recent visit by the APC national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to his residence in Abeokuta, was said to have warned the opposition party against fielding an “unclean vessel” as its presidential candidate in 2015.
An impeccable source, who was at the meeting but did not want his name mentioned, told Saturday PUNCH that last week’s visit by Tinubu to Obasanjo was meant to remind the former President of the need to support the APC to realise its ambition of winning next year’s presidential election.
The source said, “Chief Obasanjo appreciated Tinubu’s visit to his home, but specifically warned the APC to shut its door against “unclean vessel.”
“Chief Obasanjo reiterated his refusal to join the APC when Tinubu visited him in his Abeokuta residence, but warned the party to beware of Atiku.
“The former President appreciated the move by the APC to find out what he knew about two of the APC aspirants seeking the party’s presidential ticket. He was happy that the party consulted him over whom to pick as its presidential candidate. The former President gave detailed information on the APC presidential aspirants to Tinubu.”
But Atiku’s media aide, Garba Shehu, said he was not aware of such comments by Obasanjo against the former vice-president.
Shehu, who said that Atiku had consulted relevant stakeholders on his plan to become Nigeria’s president next year, said, “You can quote me; we are not in any way aware of such comment. What I can say is that the former vice-president has written a letter to his former boss, respectfully informing him of his wish to bid for the APC ticket.”
He also said that Atiku had sent similar letters to other Nigerians.
“These letters, which were personally signed, had gone to thousands of other Nigerians, including politicians, traditional and religious leaders as well as friendly-diplomatic missions.”
Senate President David Mark and Tinubu had last Friday held separate closed-door meetings with Obasanjo. Both Mark and the former Lagos State governor said the issues discussed at the meetings held at the Obasanjo’s Hilltop residence in Abeokuta centred on the state of the nation.
Tinubu had told journalists that he had discussion with Obasanjo on “some of his former boys” who would vie for elective positions in the 2015 general elections, especially the Presidency.
He had said, “We are here to pay homage to our former President and discuss with him because he has a number of influences in the political sphere.
“We need to talk to find out his thinking about Nigeria and the future. We need to seek his observation on some of his former boys who are running for Presidency in our party.”
Mark had also described Obasanjo as the father of the nation with a wealth of experience.
The Senate President had told journalists after the meeting that he came with his team, including Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan; the Peoples Democratic Party Women Leader, Mrs. Josephine Anenih; and Senator Polycarp Nwite, among others to discuss with the former President and raise some basic issues that affected both the party and the nation.
He said, “We discussed issues that will move Nigeria forward because Chief Obasanjo’s love for Nigeria is unquantifiable. So, we had a good discussion with him.”
Saturday PUNCH also learnt that the former president would support APC in its bid to win next year’s presidential election.
Party sources said Obasanjo did not need to defect to the opposition party before he could support it to win the poll.
The APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, told one of our correspondents on telephone on Thursday that the recent visit to Obasanjo by Tinubu was part of efforts to ensure that the opposition party got the former President’s support ahead of the poll.
Though the APC spokesperson said that he was not fully privy to the topic of discussion between Obasanjo and Tinubu, he said that if the party leader had gone to visit the former President, it was about how the former president could help the opposition party win in the 2015 general elections.
He said, “I am not fully aware of what they (Obasanjo and Tinubu) discussed. But of course, did you expect they would discuss church matters? Clearly if he went to visit Obasanjo, it had to be about politics and the party. What else would you expect them to talk about?
“That would not be the first time the party chieftains would meet with the former President. There is no secret about it. We want the party to win in next year’s elections. That is it.”
When asked whether the former President might defect to the APC to help the party achieve its goal, Mohammed said, “Obasanjo does not need to defect to the APC before he could help the party.
“The former President needs not declare openly or defect to our party before he can help us. Someone went to visit him, he was chased out; Asiwaju Tinubu went to visit him and he was entertained. What are you talking about? What does that tell you?”
Obasanjo had in 2013 embraced the APC when some of the party’s national leaders and governors elected on its platform visited him in Abeokuta.
The APC leaders then sought Obasanjo’s support for the party’s bid to win the forthcoming elections.
Among Obasanjo’s visitors during the December 2013 visit were Tinubu, former APC Interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande; former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari; former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Masari; former Borno State Governor, Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff; Senator Osita Isunazor; and Senator Bukola Saraki.
Tinubu, who hailed Obasanjo’s contributions to nation-building, had lamented that the country was divided more than ever.
Tinubu had added that the APC had resolved to rescue Nigeria and appealed to the former President to lead the mission.
He had said, “You have come out of tribulation and held the highest position in this country. We are here because of your courage. Nobody can say he has information more than you. You have surmounted a number of crises. Nigeria is divided more than before; to realise stable Nigeria, we want to encourage you to continue to speak the truth. We are resolved and determined to rescue Nigeria. We want you as navigator.”
But the Peoples Democratic Party, which apparently sensed that the APC might finally get Obasanjo’s full support, on Wednesday, made entreaties to beg the former President.
Obasanjo, a former Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, had refused to identify with the party following series of disagreements he had with President Goodluck Jonathan and the running of the party.
The former President even as the chairman of BoT of the party shunned the meetings of the various organs of the party, including its National Executive Committee.
But speaking while receiving former Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, who defected from the Labour Party to the PDP in Abuja on Wednesday, the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’Azu, begged Obasanjo to return to the PDP.
Mu’azu, who was reacting to an earlier apology offered by Daniel, said every member of the party must beg the former President for forgiveness.
He described Obasanjo as a pragmatic leader, who he said hailed from a zone he claimed had produced the best educated people in the country.
Mu’azu said, “I want to join former Ogun State governor, I want to join my dear elder brother and indeed all the teeming members here to very sincerely apologise to our leader, to our baba, my baba, General, President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to forgive us.
“We cannot continue. I know he has been very prayerful. In the Villa, I know he used to pray every morning. Very early, 5:30 to 6am, he is praying.
“And I know he keeps on praying all the time. As we say in our Lord’s Prayer: ‘Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who trespass against us’; Baba, you have to forgive us. I beg you in the name of the Almighty God, so that you too can be forgiven. We are your children. We are making mistakes, we have made mistakes, we have apologised.
“We will not agree even if you want to throw the baby away with the bath water, the baby will not go without you.
“So, please baba, we apologise. Come and lead us. Even the President (Goodluck Jonathan) is waiting for you. Come and lead us. You are our leader, we appreciate you, we thank you for your leadership.”

Our husbands are better lovers and more loyal– Women married to much older men

Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Adeyemi ( m) and his young wives
The Ighalos and the Olawales are neighbours, and have also been good family friends for the better part of the last five years. But interestingly, their first meeting didn’t go as well as their current relationship suggests.
When the Ighalos newly relocated to their Surulere residence from Ikeja, both in Lagos in 2009, the Olawales were the first family to welcome them to the neighbourhood. The age difference between Niyi Olawale and his wife, Olanike, is wide apart and so, they were offended by the new neighbours’ remarks on hearing that they were not father and daughter. Olawale was 60 while Olanike was 33.
“It was a first for us to see a couple with so much age difference. Although we didn’t know their ages as of the time, it was glaring that the man was much older than the woman. It was later after we had become friends that they told us how they felt insulted by the way we reacted to the information.
“Honestly, my husband and I thought the man was the woman’s father and that they were teasing us, so we freely joked about it. I think they got annoyed because as they tried to explain to us that they were a couple, we kept insisting that it couldn’t be. We were like ‘how could he (Mr. Olawale) be married to a woman that young?’
“I think my husband also joked about being the first person who would volunteer to call the police if he knew that Mr. Olawale was having sexual relations with his daughter,” said Victoria Ighalo, who is three years younger than her husband.
Love is in the heart, they say, and if it’s true that it is also blind, then looks, educational qualifications, fat bank accounts and certainly age should not matter. Such idioms are quite popular but the society is still amused by relationships and unions such as that of the Olawales.
Some people still believe that such relationships exist only because of their financial rewards and so are hardly willing to accept claims by such couples of being hit in the heart by the cupid’s arrow. The young partners in such marriages are usually branded gold diggers and the fact that the older partners are usually very rich does help arguments that such unions have anything to do with love.
In spite of this general perception, many of such couples don’t care if people snigger at their backs. To them, they are in love, married and ready to live their lives together, even with the chances that the old man or woman, depending on the situation, could die soon. One of such persons is Olanike.
After being introduced to our correspondent by the Ighalos, Olanike agreed to share her experience with Saturday PUNCH, but with her husband’s permission. Olawale, though, declined to offer any comments.
Women married to much older men
[/media-credit] Women married to much older men
The Olawales have been married for about eight years. Olawale was a rich widower when he met Olanike, but she insists that her attraction was based on pure unadulterated love for him.
“He had lost his wife when we met but I didn’t marry him for money; people can say whatever they like. It is not everyone who marries old men that do it for the money, sometimes, it is because they have genuine love for each other,” Olanike said with a measure of conviction.
“I love my husband because he’s caring, mature and responsible. I like the way he pampers and gives me attention. People often think that marrying someone much older than you means there will be no sex, but that is a lie.”
The secret
Olanike attributed the secret behind the success of her marriage to a much older Olawale to moderation.
“We have sex but the secret is not to overdo it,” she said with a coy smile. “My husband is not into frequent sex which is okay by me because I don’t want someone who will want to have sex everyday, in the first instance. If it will happen once in a week or two weeks, he makes it count.”
Asked if she’s not bothered by her husband’s wrinkly skin, Olanike asked “what wrinkly skin? I don’t see all that because I love him.”
As Olanike shared her story on the balcony of their posh duplex, her two children who she had with Olawale, played a chasing game, screaming, shouting and catching their mother’s occasional watchful glances.
The children’s joyfulness intermittently brought smiles to Olanike’s face, but a question asked by our correspondent seemed to briefly change that mood, wiping the smile off her pretty face.
Our correspondent asked if it had occurred to her that she and her children could lose Olawale someday, sooner than they expected.
With a solemn look suggesting understanding and contemplation, Olanike admitted that such thoughts had crossed her mind but that she tried not to dwell on them.
“I try not to think about it but it’s inevitable for all of us someday. That was the major reason why my mother was against my marriage initially, but after she realised that my mind was made up and that I was happy with him, she let go,” she explained.
But it is not in all cases that you find the man being the old one taking a beautiful and youthful woman as partner, there are instances where women are much older than their spouses, although rarely found in Nigeria.
But in all, there seems to be diverse reasons for age-gap relationships and marriages. Findings show that the older party is usually attracted by the youthfulness and vigour of his or her younger partner. But findings also show that the attractions some youths have for much older persons range from financial stability, years of established careers, power and fame, to claims of genuine love and that old partners are more caring, mature, disciplined, knowledgeable, experienced, sexually skilled and indulgent.
For example, a young unmarried woman, Stephanie, dating a 55-year-old man told our correspondent that she would consider marrying him if he proposed to her.
Stephanie, 21, said she is attracted to her man friend’s intelligence and wealth.
Olorunsogo ni mo wa, mi o si ni surulere (I don’t have time for patience; I prefer to go for what is already on ground). He takes care of my needs, what more can a woman ask for?” she asked our correspondent, feigning seriousness.
“In turn, I keep him happy in bed and he has no reason to complain because I give him what no one else gives him. I tend to his needs in bed and treat him like a king.”
The beauty and the rich
There have been a few high profile marriages between beautiful young women and rich and powerful old men.
One of the most prominent of such marriages is that of billionaire businessman, Chief Rasaq Okoya, 74, and Shade, 36. In 2002 when the couple got married, Okoya was 62 years old while Shade was just 24.
Early this year, the couple renewed their wedding vows at their grand residence in Lagos.
“He is a loving man, he’s a very generous person, he’s loyal, he’s polite, he’s a very disciplined man, he is a nice person, very humble and loving husband. He is different from what he is known to be, everybody knows him to be a business man, an entrepreneur, but in the house he’s a very loving person. I have learnt his generosity and hard work,” she said while extolling her husband’s virtues.
Also in a recent interview, Shade said she doesn’t keep artificial fingernails because Okoya likes his food in varieties.
“I must enter the kitchen everyday. I make sure he is well taken care of. My husband likes varieties so I don’t just cook one food. He takes them in bits. This is one of the reasons you will never see me with artificial nails,” she said. Shade is the Managing Director of Eleganza Fashion Products Limited.
Last year, 72-year-old Nigerian businessman, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, married 26-year-old Frances Enwerem after losing his wife of 40 years, Eudora, to cancer.
Iwuanyanwu is 46 years older than his wife, but the age difference notwithstanding, the couple had a lavish wedding and both have been living happily after, (at least so it seems).
An ex-beauty queen, Susan Hart, who is wedded to a renowned medical director who co-owns the popular Eko Hospital, Olorogun Sunny Kuku, in spite of a huge age gap, recently gave an insight into what some young women like herself like to see in old men.
To her, the age difference is not an issue in her marriage. “We are best of friends. My husband’s humility and humbleness also makes us best friends,” she further explained, describing the age gap as “nothing.”
“Where I come from in Port-Harcourt (Rivers State), husbands are treated as kings. It’s the woman that makes it work and this is why it’s so hard for people to know how long we have been married.
“I accord him a lot of respect so he won’t see himself missing anything when he gets outside. It’s the woman who makes the marriage work. We have been married for a couple of years now and I am still enjoying it like yesterday and he makes me really happy. I have a son for him who is over 10 years old.”
Olorogun Kuku, who is an Ijebu chief, also shared his side of the story, also describing his wife as his friend.
“I don’t want to tell you how I met my beautiful wife but I can tell you that she is my friend. She is the best thing to have happened to me. As far as I am concerned, our meeting is divine. I don’t have to think about what to wear again. She does all the designs which come out nice just the way I want them.”
Just recently, a former Miss Nigeria UK, Dabota Lawson, 26, confirmed her engagement to billionaire businessman, Sunny Aku, who is in his fifties.
Reports have it that Aku has been spoiling Lawson with expensive gifts and that their affection for each other has continued to blossom.
Just recently, Dabota tweeted a picture of a report on Aku in a national daily and its link, adding “At work and just saw this. So proud of my hubby… .”
After some public bashing, ex-Miss Osun State, Banke Oyelami, 24, came out to defend her marriage to 48-year-old Hon. Rotimi Makinde, last year.
“It’s not about what he can give me, though meeting him has changed my life,” she admitted.
“He’s very intelligent, creative and hardworking. And he’s a good person, to me, his children and everybody around him. He wants the best for me. When he proposed to me, I told him I was still in the university and he agreed to wait for me to finish and he has been very patient and supportive of my education.
“People have been saying all sorts since we announced our engagement but I am not bothered by the talk. I met a good man who loves me and it feels good because I have everything in him, a father, brother and friend. I feel secured because he’s very mature and caring and I am looking forward to our life together.”
Another ex-beauty queen, Ene Lawani, who was in a relationship with a much older John Obayuwana for seven years before they broke up, told journalists that she had a thing for dating old men.
Asked why she preferred old men, she said, “let’s just say that I understand the older ones better and they understand me better than the younger ones.
“No, I can make my money myself. It has nothing to do with their money. I learn a whole lot from them; I like to hang out with people I benefit from intellectually. Most importantly, I learn a lot from their experiences.”
Recently, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, who is over 70 years old, caused a media buzz when pictures of him and his four young wives trended on the social media. Adeyemi and his young wives were on vacation in London, UK.
In an interview with Saturday PUNCH earlier this year, 78-year-old Kessington Adebutu, spoke about his love for women. Incidentally, Adebutu’s youngest wife, Kofo, had given birth to a set of twins some months earlier after eight of marriage to the wealthy philanthropist.
However, Adebutu, who said he had no regrets being a polygamist, did not rule out marrying another wife. He said he enjoyed the company of women.

Mark, Mu’Azu, Daniel beg Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo
The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party on Wednesday tendered an unreserved apology to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
The party appealed to the former President to return and lead the party.
Obasanjo, a former Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, has refused to identify with the party following series of disagreements he has with President Goodluck Jonathan and the running of the party.
The former President even as the chairman of BoT of the party, did not attend meetings of the various organs of the party, including its National Executive Committee.
The former President had criticised President Jonathan on many occasions and even written an open letter to him, in which he accused him of many atrocities.
He had also criticised the way the President had handled the insecurity crisis in the North-East, an action that had made the President to also reply the former president.
Obasanjo is said to be angry with the President because of his insistence to run for a second term, an action that was said to have negated an agreement he had with the party and the PDP governors which Obasanjo was privy to.
And as the party is preparing for the 2015 general elections, Obasanjo has refused to identify with the PDP.
Obasanjo has been receiving politicians from both the PDP and the All Progressives Congress, who are seeking for his support.
But speaking while receiving a former governor of Ogun State, Chief Gbenga Daniel, who defected from the Labour Party to the PDP in Abuja on Wednesday, the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’Azu, begged Obasanjo to come back to the PDP.
Mu’azu, who was reacting to an earlier apology offered by Daniel, said every member of the party must beg the former President for forgiveness.
He described Obasanjo as a pragmatic leader, who he said hailed from a zone he claimed had produced the best educated people in the country.
He said the credit for this must go to the former Premier of the Western Region, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
He said, “I want to join OGD, I want to join my dear senior brother and indeed all the teeming members here to very sincerely apologise to our leader, to our baba, my baba, General, President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to forgive us.
You are our leader, we appreciate you, we thank you for your leadership.
“We thank you for your courage. And we assure you that by the grace of God, we are all good boys and girls.”
Before Mu’azu spoke, the President of the Senate, Senator David Mark had also appealed to the former President to forgive the party and its members.
He said it would be wrong for Obasanjo to abandon the party he laboured to build.
Mark, who is the chairman of the party’s Integration Committee for the party in South-West, said everyone in the state ought to belong to the PDP, which he said produced Obasanjo as the president.
He said, “Daniel is right that older persons are always right. All of us in the PDP are begging Baba to forgive us even if he is annoyed with us.”

NDLEA nabs security guard, trader with drug

Matthew; and Igwe
The Enugu State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested two suspected drug traffickers with 5.1 kilogrammes of powdery substances that tested positive for cocaine.
It was learnt that the agency’s operatives arrested the suspects – Okoye Matthew and Dominic Igwe – at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, during the inward screening of passengers on board an Ethiopian airline.
Our correspondent gathered that 34-year-old Matthew, a security guard in South Africa, was caught with the drug weighing 1.5kg.
The guard told investigators that he had brought the drug hidden in a handbag for his friend.
He said, “I work as a security guard in South Africa. It was my friend in Nigeria that requested the drug. My role is to bring it and he will reward me.”
In his confession, Igwe, 29, said he was sponsored to traffick the 3.6kg drug concealed inside folders from Brazil by a baron whose name he had yet to divulge to the operatives.
The Ebonyi-born trader added that he had wanted to use the expected proceed to clear his debts and boost his business.
“I am a trader but I am unable to pay my rent. My capital has dwindled over the years to the extent that I am in debts. I was sponsored to Sao-Paulo, Brazil to bring cocaine. I regret my involvement,” he said.
The NDLEA Commander at the airport, Mr. Udoh Nsikak-Abasi, said the arrests were made after a thorough search.
He said, “Matthew was arrested with 1.5kg of cocaine hidden inside hand bags while Igwe was found in possession of 3.6kg of cocaine concealed inside three folders. Mathew holds passport number A04483481 while Igwe has A02375991 as his passport number. The total weight of the seized drugs is 5.1kg.”
While commending the officials for the interception, the agency’s boss, Mr. Ahmadu Giade, directed the Enugu Airport Command to beef up its security checks.
He said, “This arrest is a welcome development because we must eradicate illicit drugs from our country. I want the commander to intensify security checks and ensure the interception of narcotics at the Enugu Airport.”

Asari-Dokubo took part in $9.3m arms scandal –APC

Alhaji Mujaheed Dokubo-Asari
The All Progressives Congress says ex-militant, Alhaji Mujaheed Dokubo-Asari, was involved in the $9.3m arms deal which led to the arrest of two Nigerians and an Israeli in South Africa.
The party, therefore, asked President Goodluck Jonathan to explain to Nigerians what Dokubo-Asari was doing on the plane where the money was found and confiscated by the South African authorities.
But Dokubo-Asari had distanced himself from the $9.3m botched arms deal.
The party said this in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Wednesday.
It said, therefore, that the Federal Government had a lot of questions to answer on the deal, including whether Dokubo-Asari was the contractor or the end user, who he was procuring arms for and for what purpose.
The APC said the questions became pertinent because even the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), who issued the end-user agreement for the purchase, “does not and cannot purchase arms for any of the armed services.”
The statement read in part, “Under our constitution, the NSA is an adviser and has no executive powers to deploy troops from any of the services or purchase arms for them. That the arms purported to be purchased from South Africa were ordered from the office of the NSA is nothing but a mere fabrication, and raises serious questions about the motive for the purchase.
“Nigerians will therefore like to know on whose behalf Asari Dokubo was purchasing arms. This is very crucial because Asari Dokubo has been threatening that Nigeria will not know peace if his benefactor, President Jonathan, is not re-elected. Therefore, Nigerians will like to know whether he has started stockpiling arms to make his threat a reality, since elections are due in a few months’ time.
“If these arms are meant to fight insurgency, as the government has claimed, what is Asari Dokubo’s business purchasing arms for the Nigerian military, if indeed they were for the military? Does it not occur to the Nigerian government that this man who once took arms against the state may not have jettisoned his sinister plan against the same state?”
The party said the President should also come clean on the $5.7m that was also seized by South Africa on Monday. He said Jonathan would so well by revealing the identities of the Nigerians that were arrested in South Africa.
Dokubo-Asari in a telephone interview with journalists from Saudi Arabia where he is presently performing the 2014 Hajj, said the last time he visited South Africa was in 2002 and could not have gone to any country without a visa.
He said, “Can you enter any country without a visa? No person can enter any country without a visa. Presently, I am in Saudi Arabia performing my Hajj as the Amirul Hajj of Bayelsa State and this can be confirmed. I flew Flynass from Kaduna on September 27. So, it is really a shame that Lai Mohammed who has defiled the name of Allah has become a pathological and award-winning liar.
“Nobody enters any country without a visa and I have not been to South Africa since 2002. I flew Arik airline from Lagos on the September 27 and went to Kaduna where I flew Flynass airline and came to Saudi Arabia.”

South Africa seizes another ‘arms’ cash’ from Nigeria

Just three weeks after seizing $9.3 million from two Nigerians and an Israeli for arms purchase, South African authorities have seized another $5.7 million arms money from Nigeria, report says on Monday.
The money was seized by the country’s Asset Forfeiture Unit of the National Prosecuting Authority.
The cash, according to the report was for yet another arms deal between the two countries.
The earlier $9.3 million – stashed in several suitcases was seized at Lanseria Airport, north of Johannesburg, in September.
The money was frozen in both cases for allegedly being the proceeds of illegal transactions.
City Press’ sister paper Rapport gathered that the department for offences against the state in the Special Investigating Unit is also involved.
Documents in the newspaper’s possession show that the earlier consignment was approved by the Nigerian government – with the country national security adviser personally issuing the end-user certificate for the transaction.
An entire “shopping list” was supplied with the certificate, which included everything from helicopters to unmanned aircraft, rockets and ammunition.
Sources close to the investigation said the latest transaction was between Cerberus Risk Solutions, an arms broker in Cape Town, and Societe D’Equipments Internationaux, a Nigerian company in Abuja.
This company, according to an impeccable source, paid the R60m into Cerberus’ account at Standard Bank.
Cerberus was previously registered as a broker with the National Conventional Arms Control Committee, but the registration expired in May this year.
The marketing and contracting permits also expired at the same time.

MDA: Utere family to build a studio

The host, Osas Ighodalo, Nigerian Breweries Marketing Manager, Walter Drenth, with the Utere family
Lagos stood still for the Utere family on Saturday when they danced their way to fame and wealth.
The ‘dance troupe’ comprising the father, mother and their children shook the Eko Hotel and Suites with electrifying dance steps to defeat three other equally sets of family dancers, thus emerging the winner of the Eighth Maltina Dance All.
With the victory, the Utere family earned N10m, alongside other prizes.
The victory, which was decided via voting, did not disappoint the crowd that witnessed the finale as many believed that the Uteres really proved their mettle.
But like the proverbial masquerader that dances excellently in the market place, who had, however, had sustained rehearsals in the grove, the representative of the family, Wilfred Utere, noted that they really worked hard to achieve the feat.
The excited Wilfred said, “My family and I are short of words to describe how we feel now. It is so overwhelming to be crowned winners tonight. We have really worked hard to be here today. I want to thank all those who have supported us all the way. I want to also thank Maltina for giving us a platform to showcase our talents and to also be rewarded with this huge amount of money.”
On what the family plans to do with the N10 million, he said that among other things, they would open a dance studio while he would further his education abroad.
Apart from the grand prize of N10 million, the Utere family also earned the title of Nigeria’s number one dance family while the Uzodinma family who claimed second position went home with N3m. The Odigie family who came third were rewarded with N1m.
The Maltina Dance All 2014 again lived up to the expectation of many fun lovers. The family-oriented nature made it unique, as it created sentiments that transcended personalities, ethnicities and nationalities.
As the 10 families that made it to the academy slugged it out with captivating choreography and dances, many could not help wondering how each of the groups was able to form what looked like a professional troupe.
The grand finale was thus the culmination of weeks of suspense, drama and excitement.
Ten families were initially admitted into the dance academy, after which they were subsequently whittled down to the four families – Utere, Uzodinma, Odigie and Unanka – that took part in the grand finale.
The families first competed in the Rhythm of Naija dance style. The Utere family, who were first on stage, set the tone for an awesome night with a dazzling performance to Shake Bodi by Skales. The Unanka family performed Mavin’s Dorobucci hit song; Uzodima family performed Lil Kesh’s Shoki while Odigie family staged Ukwu by Timaya.
On the essence of the competition, Senior Brand Manager, Maltina, Mr. Adewole Adedeji, said the Maltina Dance All platform had been very effective in audience engagement.
He said, “The MDA platform has been sustained over the past eight years because we are a consumer-centric organisation. We will continue to invest in the things that create positive experiences for consumers to connect with each other and also with our brand.”

Ibrahimovic hails intelligent Mourinho

Ibrahimovic
Paris Saint-Germain star Zlatan Ibrahimovic has revealed Jose Mourinho is the most intelligent coach he has ever worked with, Goal reports.
The pair enjoyed success together at Inter during the 2008-09 season, in which Ibrahimovic finished as Serie A’s top goalscorer as the club lifted the league title.
The 33-year-old has worked with a host of top coaches during his career, including former Barcelona boss and current Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola, but he says nobody comes close to Mourinho.
He told the Guardian, “Mourinho is very intelligent. He doesn’t treat everybody the same. He knows how to treat people as individuals to get 100 per cent out of them.
“He’s the most intelligent coach I’ve worked with in the way he approaches players and – ‘manipulates’ is the wrong word – gets them very pumped up. No doubt.”
Despite winning 11 league titles in 13 years in Holland, Spain, Italy and France, the Champions League remains absent from his list of honours, though he insists he will be content with his career with or without the trophy.
“Let’s go back 15 years and all I saw then has come true. Everybody who was trash-talking me? Now they are eating their words. This is my real trophy.
“I have won 23 collective titles but the one that is missing is the Champions League. At PSG we are trying to win it. But even if we don’t, the 23 I have already won, coming from where I did, are incredible. I’ve had an amazing adventure.”
Ibrahimovic revealed his disdain at being asked to trial for Arsenal ahead of a proposed move 13 years ago.
The Sweden striker was playing for his local club Malmo when he offered a trial for Arsene Wenger’s side, but he was not impressed at having to prove his worth to the manager.
“Today, Wenger says it was a misunderstanding. But I didn’t like being asked to prove myself,” he told the Guardian.
“I know I’m good enough. I don’t need to show it to you. Either you know who I am or you don’t.
“I remember being in Wenger’s office and you could tell he was the boss. It was Wenger. But I don’t think I was so close (to signing). I went to Ajax the next day.”

Ekiti indigenes’ll go on exile for Fayose –Falana

Mr. Femi Falana
LAGOS lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, has said that some indigenes of Ekiti State are planning to go on exile as soon as the governor-elect of the state, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, assumes office.
Fayose, who won the June 21 governorship election in Ekiti, will be sworn in on October 16.
Falana, who is an indigene of the state, said, “It is clear that the people have been taken back to the era of state-sponsored terrorism. Already, rival drivers’ unions and urchins are unleashing mayhem on innocent people, including judges and judiciary workers.
“Fayose should be advised not to frustrate his own inauguration. With the ongoing political crisis, some development agencies have decided to pull out of the state.
“I know industrialists who have decided to relocate to neighbouring states. I have some friends who have resolved to go on exile from Ekiti State for the next four years.
“The exodus of business and the elite will have adverse effect on the fragile economy of the state because no investor takes funds to any place where the rule of law is in abeyance.”
Asked if the people of the state had made a mistake in electing Fayose as their governor, Falana said the wishes of the people must be respected.
“The Ekiti people are perfectly entitled to elect whoever they like to govern them. That is what bourgeois democracy is all about. Up till now, the world is still paying for the decision of the American people to elect George Bush Jr. I believe that the wishes of the Ekiti electorate should be respected,” he said.
“However, Fayose owes himself a duty to turn away from violence because no leader can govern in an atmosphere of anarchy and chaos. He has to embrace the rule of law,” Falana added.
Reacting to Falana’s claims, a media aide to the governor-elect, Lere Olayinka, said the Ekiti people had made their choice and that “Falana, as a lawyer, should know that he does not have more stake in Ekiti than the over 200,000 Ekiti people, who expressed their preference for Fayose with their votes on June 21.”
Olayinka said, “Ekiti people have spoken loudly with their votes and if the likes of Falana does not like the decision the people have made, they can relocate to wherever they so desire.
“As for Fayose, he will remain committed to the welfare of the teachers, local government workers, civil servants, health workers, okada riders, artisans, market men and women, students and others who gave him their votes on June 21, not minding the anger of the likes of Falana, who believe that Ekiti people cannot choose their own governor.”
