TRUST ME I WILL GIVE MY BEST Fiberesima, new AGN boss

Ibinabo Fiberesima
Ibinabo Fiberesima made history recently when she emerged the first female president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria. As expected, many notable actors and actresses attended her inauguration last Sunday at the upscale Rumours Night Club in Lagos.
For the first time in a long while, the event was well attended and the actual handing over took place in a warm and peaceful atmosphere. The turn-out signalled an end to the internal squabbles and controversies that had almost diminished the worth of the AGN.
In his farewell speech, the immediate past president of the AGN, Segun Arinze, described Fiberesima as the choice of an overwhelming majority of its membership.
Urging other members of the guild to put the past behind them, Arinze said, “This is a new beginning for the AGN. We must let bygones be bygones and give total support to the new president. Please, let us put an end to rancour and join hands to make the Actors Guild of Nigeria the best in Africa. History is made today as I peacefully hand over the mantle of leadership to (Ibinabo) Fiberesima.”
Nollywood diva, Genevieve Nnaji, led others to publicly declare their support for the new boss of the AGN.
“I gave the AGN a wide berth because of the previous crisis. Now, I’m back to identify with our new president (Ibinabo) Fiberisima. I’ve known her for a long time and I can vouch for her integrity and ability to get the job done. I’m glad that we’ve got the right person for the job,” Nnaji said.
In an interview with LIFE&BEAT, Fiberesima wasted no time in outlining her agenda for the Guild. “We are starting with a health insurance and pension scheme for actors and actresses in this country. It has never been done before. The motive is to put an end to the situation where actors go cap-in-hand to beg for money in times of difficulty.
“By the time we clock 100 days in office, the health insurance and the pension scheme would have been in place. As I speak with you, I’m just waiting for the data to ascertain how many actors and actresses are members of the AGN.
“It is not true that moviemakers and other stakeholders cannot gain access to the $200m Entertainment Endowment Fund with the NEXIM Bank. Some people have benefited from the loan. But we are seriously working on it. That is why the Federal Government has given us the You Win project.
“With You Win, it is easier to get funds for movies and other entertainment projects.
“As it is, my administration has a lot of work to do. I strongly believe that before the two-year tenure is over, some of the challenges facing the movie industry in Nigeria would have been professionally handled, trust me.

Buhari may reject Boko Haram offer

Former Head of State, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd),
There were indications in Abuja on Friday that a former Head of State, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), may reject the offer by the Boko Haram Islamic sec to lead talks between it and the Federal Government.
Our correspondent gathered that the associates of the three-time presidential aspirant have advised against accepting such offer.
Though his spokesman, Mr. Yinka Odumakin said he (Odumakin) had yet to speak with him since the news broke out on Thursday, he gave an assurance that Buhari would not accept the offer.
Odumakin, who is outside the country, said in a text message to our correspondent, “I’m out of the country and yet to speak with him but I can tell you authoritatively that he won’t accept such offer as he does not support murderous activities.”
His associates and friends were said to have reasoned that accepting the offer might be misconstrued by his political opponents.
Already, the Congress for Progressive Change has said that Buhari has nothing to do with members of the sect.
The party, while reacting to the terms of peace talks with the Federal Government as released by the sect on Thursday, said that the choice of Buhari as one of the negotiators by the sect should not be misconstrued to mean he was a member of the dreaded sect.
A statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin, on Friday, was however silent on whether the party’s former presidential candidate would accept the offer or not.
When called on the telephone to seek clarification on this, Fashakin said that should not be the issue, adding that the behaviour of the Peoples Democratic Party-led central government was to use the Boko Haram issue to divert attention from its alleged incompetence.
His statement reads in part, “Our attention, in the CPC (has been drawn) to a widely publicised news that our National Leader, Muhammadu Buhari, has been appointed to take part in a Boko Haram/Federal Government parley.
“As a party, we’re convinced that this is the latest gambit in the desire of this organically corrupt PDP-led Federal Government in diverting the attention of the unsuspecting Nigerian public from the ongoing massive looting of their common patrimony.
“Without any scintilla of equivocation, General Muhammadu Buhari has never been directly or remotely connected with any insurrection or insurgency against the Nigerian nation and her people.
“He remains the quintessential patriot that continues to magnetise the very best across the ethno-religious boundaries within the Nigerian nation-space.”
He alleged that the PDP was the harbinger of the insecurity travails of the Nigerian people for the sole reason of ensuring perpetuity in governance.
Fashakin said that there were three variants of Boko Haram in the country.
“The original Boko Haram that is at daggers drawn with the Nigerian authority for the extra-judicial killing of their leader; the criminal Boko Haram that is involved in all criminality for economic reasons and of course, the most lethal of all, the political Boko Haram, which this PDP-led FG represents,” the statement added.
He appealed to Nigerians to reject “this latest deceptive ploy by this PDP-led government and demand more transparency in the governance of the nation.”

Lovers charged with murder, conspiracy

Thursday, 01 November 2012
A 27-year-old transporter, David Omoregbe and his 22-year-old girlfriend, Temisan Bolodeoku, on Tuesday, appeared before a Yaba magistrates’ court, Lagos,  for allegedly killing the woman’s lover.
Omoregbe and Bolodeoku, an apprentice tailor, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder.
The prosecutor, Inspector Rita Momoh, said that the duo committed the offence at about 12.30 p.m. on October 2, at No. 20, Adeojo Street, Isheri-Oshun, Lagos State.
She said that the deceased, one Kehinde Owasoye, was Bolodeoku’s ex-lover.
Momoh added that “Omoregbe, who is the present lover of Bolodeoku, learnt that the woman was seeing the deceased again and got upset.’’
She said that on the fateful day, Omoregbe traced Owasoye and Bolodeoku to the said address, where he found them together in bed and stabbed the deceased with a pair of scissors, causing Owasoye’s death.
According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene sections 221 and 231 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
The magistrate, Mrs M.O. Tanimola, did not take the plea of the defendants, but ordered that they be remanded  pending the advice of the State Director of Public Prosecution.
Tanimola, thereafter, adjourned the case to November 12.

Finbank MD, others manipulate N10.9bn finbank shares says  EFCC

AN Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) witness, Anafi Buba Mohammed, on Wednesday, while testifying in the ongoing trial of former Managing Director of FinBank Plc, Okey Nwosu and three others, over allegation of N10.9billion theft, stated that the defendants manipulated the bank’s shares.
At the hearing before Justice Lateefa Okunnu of a Lagos high court sitting in Ikeja, Anafi told the court that the bank, under the leadership of Nwosu, manipulated the bank’s shares through several companies created by the bank management.
According to Anafi,  a law enforcement officer who was also the Head of Compliance and Enforcement department in the EFCC, the companies used for the manipulation, were known as Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs).
The officer, while being led in evidence by the EFCC counsel, Rotimi Jacobs(SAN), explained that the though there were many of the SPVs, only seven were pronounced during the course of investigation.
He further added that the bank’s money were used to secure the shares through two stock broking firms,  Springboard Trust and Investment Limited and Integrated Limited,  before they were  transferred to the SPVs, whose main duty was to manipulate the bank’s shares.
It was Anafi’s testimony that such act of buying shares by the bank ran foul of regulations of the supervising authorities, even though it was a practice used by many banks to boost their image in the market.
He also explained that in the course of his investigation, it was discovered that 34 million of such shares of the bank were later  crossed from Integrated Limited to Dayo Famoroti, a director in the bank, adding that their investigation was non-conclusive as they were stopped mid- way by the authority.

Akwa Ibom deputy governor resigns

Akwa Ibom State deputy governor, Mr Nsima Ekere, on Wednesday, tendered his resignation from office after seving in the capacity for 17 months.
In a letter dated Wednesday, October 31,  endorsed by his press secretary, Mr Inemesit Ekere said his resignation was on personal grounds.
He, however, commended the state governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio and the people of the state for the opportunity given him to serve the state.
Ekere, who was the chairman of  the Akwa Ibom  Investment and Industrial Promotion Commission, (AKIIPOC) before his last appointment wished the governor and the people well in the remaining years of the administration.

FG to boost power supply in North, South-South

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has explained that the ongoing Jos-Makurdi-Ugwuaji-Ikot Ekpene 330 KV line and its associated 330/132 sub-station in Apir, Benue State, will serve as a major power evacuation link between the stranded generated power in the South-South and the northern part of the country.
The Principal Manager, Transmission, Apir Works Centre, Mr Emmanuel Akpa, stated this when the delegation of the National Good Governance Tour led by the Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, visited the project in Makurdi.
According to a statement by his Press Secretary, Mr Joseph Mutah, the project, which is currently at 78 per cent completion stage, will transmit power to Benue, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba and parts of Nasarawa states.
The statement quoted Mr Akpa as saying the project would equally serve as the much-needed ring close circuit arrangement required for the national grid.
Akpa, however, stressed the need to construct a 33KV switchyard and feeder bay at the transmission station to give room for effective evacuation of power.
“The 330/132KV sub-station design as it is presently being implemented, does not in anyway conform to international accepted standard, as this does not give room for operational flexibility. We pray that additional transformer capacity be added to make way for continuous power flow even when one is undergoing maintenance,”  he advised.
He told the delegation that the Apir Works Centre was carved out of the TCN New Haven Substation, Enugu for prompt response to faults in Benue State and environs.
